European Day of Languages
European Day of Languages is celebrated on 26th of September each year and is a day to encourage language learning across Europe.
The key objectives are to:
- Alert the public to the importance of language learning and increase intercultural understanding
- Promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe
- Encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school
I have always looked forward to European Day of Languages as I tend to spend time with kids in schools or colleges talking about the importance of learning languages. The celebrations are always fun and usually involve food!
Who can get involved with European Day of Languages? Anyone! Schools and colleges hold a range of fun activities, including games, quizzes and competitions, to get pupils interested in languages. The European Day of Languages website has a wealth of information to help you celebrate languages: calendar of events featuring activities taking place all around the world in celebration of the Day; information on the EDL in over 20 languages; materials for teachers / event organisers ; and online games to test your language knowledge and skills.
